JBM creates innovative retail design for Burpee

Since 1881 W. Atlee Burpee has consistently brought innovation to the seed market by providing open pollinated and hybrid vegetable and flower seeds. They offer all non-GMO hybrids, heirloom seeds, and certified organic varieties.


Burpee was challenged to do more with less regarding their seed packet display; something innovative, fresh, and more efficient. They needed seed packets that hung neatly on a spinner rack instead of packets that stand in typical trays. This required a hole through the seed packet, which wasn’t ideal when dealing with smaller seeds that could easily fall through the hole.


JBM’s Innovation Team worked closely with Burpee to create a design solution that fit the new display hardware. JBM created and tested numerous innovative combinations to meet their design needs. Placing the hole higher on the packet, using durable paper and a secure gum, protected the contents of the packet and allowed for a turnstyle hanging display. JBM transformed the packaging of the product from a standard seed packet to a unique, customized hanging packet.


The new hanging seed packet design worked seamlessly with the new display hardware. And it helped Burpee stand out from their competitors.

JBM’s continued innovation efforts lead to additional throughput improvements the next year, such as increased fill volume and saving hundreds of hours on filling equipment.
