What exactly is kitting?
In warehouse or 3PL terminology, kitting means assembling multiple products into a kit. The kit could be several variants of the same product (such as multiple types of seeds to grow a complete garden), a product with related accessories packaged together (like a vacuum cleaner with different nozzle attachments), or a set of items needed to achieve a desired result (a painting set with canvas, paints and brushes). All these separate items need to be packaged together, which is what kitting specialists do.
What does the kitting process look like?
Efficient kitting requires a bit of setup and a lot of space. The kit's separate components are placed at stations around the space, and the kitting professional visits each station to collect a piece. Once all the pieces have been collected, the kitter packages the components together, drops off the finished kit, and then begins the process again. This method ensures all components are included in the final kit.
